Trekking and Durians

The durian season has started. Every time I pass by the durian stalls, it will remind me of trekking at Gunung Datuk. Why is it so?

I believe eating and enjoying durians – the king of fruits – at the peak would be a fantastic idea. So far, we have tried carrying watermelons, bananas and other light-weighted fruits up the hill but we have not tried durians yet. It is quite a ‘thorny’ issue and not an easy task to do.

According to plan, we shall trek Gunung Datuk and proceed to Weng father-in-law's durian orchard, which is about 7km from Gunung Datuk. We can eat as much as we want for free at the plantation there, courtesy of Weng.

I was asked quite a similar question: is it the cars or the girls in the recent Japan Super GT car racing in Sepang F1 Circuit that attracted the spectators?
.
A good friend said, for this trekking trip, the durians chose the date - not the trekkers. For the Super GT event, the umbrella girls are there.

Weng needs to monitor the harvest of the durians, preferably, we shall go when the production is peak.

Last year, Jean (click here) asked me whether I would like to join her group to trek Gunung Nuang. An added attraction for consideration was that it was durian season. There was one big durian tree in the jungle bearing lots of durians and it was ready for harvesting. She said, “Bring along a parang (long knife)!” I was curious why we needed a parang to open durians, that, a knife would do the job. It turned out that the parang was needed to cut the lalang (tall grass) leading to the durian tree.
