Puchong Hill Trail Run

Trail running at Puchong Hill on a cool and wet Saturday morning, 21 Nov 2015 ... After the haze season was over, these days, the talk of the town is "rain". It was raining heavily the evening before. With the wet ground, trail running requires a little more skill.

Along the trails, there were three huge, old trees that fell and block the passage. One of the trees, I guessed, hit a lady trekker a few days ago; she later died in the hospital.

Puchong Hill Trail Running

Three groups of trail runners congregated for a social trail running at Puchong Hill on Saturday 24 Oct 2015. Led by Chow Kean Fatt and KH Tang as the Team Leads, the group took about 3 hours traversing the many trails for a distance of about 9km inclusive of waiting for one another, and spending time at the mini waterfall.

We have a running celebrity, Seow Kong, who joined us in the outing. He passionately did many of those international ultra-marathon trail running events. Together with him are a few of his Taiwanese friends who are excited to run in the tropical jungle.

Before heading to the "peak" of the Puchong trail, ChowKF led the fast-paced runners for another tough uphill run, while the not-so-fast trail runners would go direct to the "peak" and rendezvous there. He fondly called that hill the "Gasket Burning" hill – meaning that a lot of power is required to go up that hill and may cause the damage of the gasket of an engine if not well lubricated.

These days, we are not too overly concern with the poor quality of air, courtesy of our neighbouring country. In the canopy of the trees aid by the abundance of oxygen produced by the photosynthesis process, the air in the jungle is better. Besides, according to the official report, we are not going to stay indoor until March 2016 when the haze problem is completely over.

Overall, it was a fun and enjoyable outing that we were able to run with many of the trail runners friends together.

We Wish to Trek at Puchong Hill Again

Attached here is a report appearing in The Star Metro dated 28 May 2012 about Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve (or we call it Puchong Hill). Located near to Bandar Putri of Puchong, the trails are shady and not too difficult for trekking, that is good for a moderate workout.

The authority of UPM, however, is not pleased and decided to close the trails recently due to following reasons:

a. disallowing trekkers to encroach into UPM's outdoor research areas as trekkers' presence are affecting their research work;

b. throwing of rubbish by inconsiderate trekkers when they trek.

If the Wawasan Trekkers Group (as in the report below) manage to persuade the authority of UPM in agreeing to reopen the trail, this time, we must be serious about their concerns: no straying into unauthorized boundaries, and we must also NOT go to the waterfall area.

Here is a funny incident told to me by Edwin Goh, a regular trail runner friend, while doing trail running at Puchong Hill last year:

When the Iranian lecturers came to UPM for some exchange programmes, the UPM lecturers were very excited wanting to show their counterparts the prized possession – a pristine and tranquil small waterfall with clear water in their research centre of Ayer Hitam Forest Research, never mind that the name and the actual colour of the water do not tally.

When they happily arrived at the waterfall area, they were shock to see some trekkers were also there happily swimming in the pool, and some were having a jolly good time enjoying picnic by the pool … :-)

Puchong Hill Trail Running

The group – quite a big group this time – went for trail running at Puchong Hill (or Air Hitam Forest Reserve) on Tuesday, 30 August, the first day of Raya holiday. Other than the regulars, the new friends are Chin, Vance, SC's son, Gandhi, Lohita, Kirandeep, Wuan, Bernard Lee, and Siaw Cheng.

This time, all were running. From a distance, it is just like a line of runners meandering through the trail around the hill.

To add fun to the event, Lady Su came with two of her newly acquired pet doggies. In outdoor activities, the doggies are like children that require constant supervision to avoid straying away due to their inquisitive mind.

While taking a breather, I could hear a few runners were breathing extra hard; not that they were panting for breath, I would think that they were trying to breathe in more fresh air and the good negative ions.

Front: Wendy Liu, Tee's wife, Lady Su, Lai Kuan, Siaw Cheng, Patricia Yap.

Very busy exchanging ideas about doggies ... Patricia Yap, Lady Su and Lai Kuan. That black and white dog likes Patricia (sniffing and social connection in progress)... :-)

Lady Su’s doggies are named Dolly and Parton. Every time we call ‘Dolly Parton’ loudly, I could see other trekkers start looking around to see whether the one from the USA is here trekking in Kuala Lumpur ... :-)

Just like human beings that exhibit different characteristic, the yellow dog is more intelligent and not afraid of water, but not the black one.

 Taking a breather

In most hills, the peak is just a barren ground that we hope to be able to see the sky.
In this track, the icing on the cake is that it is a waterfall and a pool with clear water.

The pristine pool

Part of the group went for Dim Sum for brunch. All Dim Sum restaurants in this Puchong Commercial Centre are packed with people. The ‘lau sar pau’ (pau with butter and yellow milk custard filling) taste fantastic!

Trail Running at Puchong Hill

The group went for a trail running at Puchong Hill led by our star trail runner, Edwin Goh, on Saturday morning, 6 August 2011.
.
We went beyond the standard loop. The most satisfying discovery at the end of the extended trail was the mini waterfall within the restricted area of UPM (University Pertanian Malaysia).

That was my first time going to the waterfall in Puchong Hill. Though the scale of the waterfall is small, but the water is clear and pristine.

I like running in Puchong Hill. Other than the fresh air, with the numerous uphill and downhill, it is also a test of swift manoeuvring skill among the many bends and avoid hitting the tress along the trail. When running fast, that can be tough.

Edwin Goh told us this funny story: Not long ago, a group of Iranian lecturers came to UPM; the UPM lecturers were most delighted to show the Iranian counterparts the pristine waterfall in the compound of UPM. When they arrived here, they were shock to see many trekkers swimming in the pool, having picnic and have a good time there.
.
Okay, when you come here next time, do keep the place clean. Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but your footprints!!
.
Warning: if you are lucky to meet the UPM rangers/guards, be prepared to be reprimanded – you will be FINED !!
