An Enjoyable Run at Sepang Gold Coast

“Wah! The host was really thoughtful,” one runner was commenting while admiring at another runner who was busy eating. His left hand was holding a fork stuck with a piece of steam tapioca and precariously balancing with a bowl of red bean “tong sui” while the right hand was holding a tablespoon ready for the next mouthful. “That must be the carbo-loading before the run,” I quipped.

When the runners alighted from a convoy of vehicles, Chee Wee parent’s bungalow was bustling with activities. It was filled with laughter amid greetings and conversation. Without starting the run, the endorphin was circulating in our bodies already.

We were pleased that the host, Chee Wee a.k.a Penguin-11, was spending considerable amount of time boiling the red bean “tong sui” and steaming tapioca to welcome the Penguin Runners and friends.

The Journey

To go or not to go to Sungai Pelek? At noon on Saturday 6 January, the sky was gloomy. After reading the Star newspaper the day before with headline “Storm Brewing”, I have reservation whether to proceed.

As reported, the northern and east coast states would be bracing for thunderstorms, heavy rain as strong winds may develop into a cyclone. Severe weather was expected to hit a few states; the only consolation was that the newspaper did not mention Selangor state.

In oversea countries, the people would change plan according to weather forecast. Nevertheless, I just take a little risk and adhere with the plan.

When Jason Lee, one of the photographers of Pacesetters Club, arrived at my house in a new Toyota Innova, he was prepared to drive there. So, I have to transfer all my stuff into his MPV. That include an icebox containing six big bottles of pre-chilled 100 Plus drinks which yours truly was sponsoring. We later went to pick up Rose, but her friends could not join us.

The journey from USJ Subang Jaya to Sepang Gold Coast via KLIA route took about one hour traveling in 90km/hour speed limit. There was slight drizzle along the way. However, we would prefer a downpour and clear sky later at Sungai Pelek.

Yours truly - put on the best smiles

Starting the Run

At 3:45 p.m., we were the first car to arrive, other than Chee Wee. We were pleased to see the blue sky there. Half hour later, a convoy of cars arrived. The moment runners met and started to talk, time passed really fast. When we were ready after the photos session, it was almost 5:00 p.m., one hour behind schedule.

It was quite an interesting sight: Chee Wee has leading the pack of runners while Jezamine, Eric and Gerald were cycling; followed by a convoy of vehicles. All were heading toward the beach. It was windy while running at the housing area almost devoid of vehicle. We run through the kampong road en route to the beach. Since it was a light-and-easy fun run, we were running at relaxing pace and chatting along the way.

Immediately arriving at the beach, I spotted Jason Lee who was busy taking photos of runners in action. He was using two Nikon dSLR cameras, a D70s and a newly bought new model of D80. Depending on the requirement, I could imagine that he interchanged from a short-gun (wide-angle lens) to a bazooka (tele-lens).

Gold Coast

Further down the beach, we arrived at the location where Tony had set up the food-cum-water station at one of the “pondok” (shelter). Tony was actually setting up the mini gas stove for frying burger.

With the strong breeze, Eric, Lee and PK Chan were acting as wind-breaker to shield the wind from extinguishing the fire.

There was lots of food to go round. A few of the runners were concerned that the amount of food that we ate was more than the calories required to run that short distance for a duration of only half an hour.

So Chee Wee led the pack of runners and ran to the other end of the beach passing by Sepang Goldcoast site-office. He was wearing a yellow Pacesetters Club T-shirt which instantly provided much details to on-lookers where we came from. When we run, there were cars that slowed down or just stop for a while to let the runners pass. We were like head-turner: when we ran, I observed some people were turning their heads at us too.

It was a rare occasion that Chan Wing Kai, the Club’s photographer, and I were in the same photo. Three photographers of Pacesetters Club (including Jason Lee) were congregated in the same outing.

We were eating, chatting and some, running until 6:30 p.m. to have a glimpse of sunset. The hue was just ordinary as there were quite a fair bit of clouds that blocked the ray. After admiring the sunset, we started to run back at 7:10 p.m. The journey took about 35 minutes and the sky was almost dark.

Seafood Dinner

Chee Wee parent’s house was busy with runners again. This time, we were busy taking turn to take bath. Poula Chong has a great idea to speed up the process: he used a garden hose to bathe at the garden with a table blocking the view.

We later adjourned to seafood restaurant in Tanjong Sepat for dinner. Reaching the restaurant at 9:00 p.m., all diners have left and about 10 workers were waiting for our arrival. We have the entire air-con room to ourselves – we occupied two tables with 14 persons each.

Seated:Ross, Tim, Simon
Middle Row:Ong Siok Leng, Gerard Pereira, Sonny Ng, PK Chan, Jenny Leong, Jezamine, Molly, Agnes Chin, Rose, Yap Keng Peng, Siok Bee, YeohSC, Chan Wing Kai, Joo Ean, Eric Teo, Vivian Ngok.
Third Row:KC Leong, Paulo Chong, Chee Wee, Phua, Wong, Lee Puh Heng, Tony.

In order to confirm the food, Chee Wee’s family actually came a week before to dine at the same restaurant. The food was served quite fast. True to the name of a seafood dinner, we have fish, prawn, crab, lala, etc. There was lots of laugher from the next table. Chee Wee’s son was able to click very well with the two mat salleh friends.

Conclusion

It was a fun-filled outing with a group of runners who share the common passion. For runners, it is quite true to say that “have runs with travel”. Running not only improves our fitness, but it also fosters closer relationship among runners. I wish you were there too. Well, we will plan for the next outing again.

Sonny Ng, Molly, Chee Wee and PK Chan: Enjoying a light-and-easy run to the beach.

The Tony Burger stall is set up by the beach which is at the mid-point. Lots of drinks, tidbits and burger to go round. Input is more than output for running after 5km. Eric, Lee and PK Chan are acting as wind breaker to shield the strong wind from distinguishing the fire.

Running on a different terrain -- no sound of vehicle, only the waves hitting the shore.

Yeah, Good times together.

The equation between Sungai Pelek, Bagan Lalang Beach and SGC: Bagan Lalang Beach is now called Sepang Gold Coast – transformation into a much fashionable name. And the town is called Sungai Pelek. A few days ago, there was an advertisement in the Star newspaper promoting the new development of SGC.

The Journey

We are not going on a convoy as in wedding occasion and tie tin cans with label "Just Arrived" at the back of our cars. Instead, we will go there silently something like treasure hunting style tallying the actual location with Chee Wee's superb location map.

Make sure that we show up at Chee Wee parent’s weekend bungalow retreat in Sg. Pelek before 4:00 p.m. Precision timing is important in order not to miss the sunset, which is one of the main attractions. Otherwise, a slag in timing means we need to run faster at 4.2195 minutes per km in order to compensate the lost time.

Fast Runners

Oh Yes! For those fast runners, this will be the only time that you have to cap your speed. It is important that no one should outrun Chee Wee (Penguin-11), the host, even if we can. He is the only one that knows the route. If you run faster than him, there is a danger that you will end up in Port Dickson and not the seafood dinner restaurant.

Running through the jungle or running to Port Dickson should be a different run with a catchy theme reserved in near future. Besides, there will be one or two girl runners who run a little slower. This means the fast runners will have to do extra service of "loop-back" to accompany them.

Note: not "look back" to admire the girl runners in action, which could easily sprain your neck. For detail procedure on "loop-back", please read Star Wars – The Running saga on 18 August 2005 Archive (on the left sidebar of this weblog).

Runners’ Identification

There will be many kampung folks and holiday makers who might experience rude awakening from the group of runners that appear from no where while they enjoy themselves at the peaceful beach. To save them the trouble of asking around, it is suggested that a few of the runners should wear Pacesetters running attire, which is self-explanatory to onlookers.

Water-station

There will be a special water-station manned by Tony (Penguin-3). He planned to participate in the AmBank KLIM Circuit #1Training Run on the same morning and rest in the afternoon. Since most stalls operators (and that include our macho guy) put on fashionable sunglasses, make sure you don't get your drink from the wrong stall lining up the beach due to mistaken identify as that would require exchange of payment.

Camping

Tony, Eric (Penguin-10), Vivian and Joanne will be camping by the beach at night when the dusk settles down ... that would be truly romantic. The previous time that I camped by the beach was at Teluk Batik beach (Lumut) when I was schooling in Form 2... my gosh, that was really a few decades ago.

If it drizzles that night, they will have to seek shelter in the safety of theirs cars, which are parked a few meters away. However, if it pours, it is suggested that they shift the tents to the car porch area of Chee Wee parent's bungalow for better insulation.

So, we are all set ... Sepang Gold Coast, here we come again.

Planning for Another Run in Sungai Pelek

Yes, the Penguin runners and friends are starting the 2007 New Year with an organized event – a 13-kilometer, non-competitive and light-and-easy run. Since it is the beginning of an auspicious new year, we do not want to go full-throttle ahead yet, which is best reserved for GE-PACM
30km Run on 21 January.

After the first trial run in Sungai Pelek on 25 November 2006, we will be having a mock run on coming Saturday 6 January. The host for this run is Chee Wee (Penguin-11) whose hometown is in Sungai Pelek.

Please click on the November 2006 Archives (at the left sidebar of this weblog) to view previous report.

Though the name "Sungai" means river in B.Malaysia, we are not running across or into river – that will be a different theme in future's run. The course is a country road surrounded by lush vegetation passing by the peaceful Bagan Lalang beach. After the run, we will spend time together in admiring the colourful sunset by the beach and later reward ourselves with sumptuous seafood dinner.
x
Judging from the intensity of verbal communication in previous trip, we shall have another round of lively conversation, delightful laughter, sumptous dinner, and good times together to celebrate another year of "running" together.

Traveling time from Kuala Lumpur to Sungai Pelek is less than 1.5 hours with moderate speed in small town areas. Our first destination is Chee Wee parent's weekend bungalow retreat. According to Chee Wee, the runners can bring along towels and clean clothing to take bath there after the run, and the 50 cents entrance fee – as in Bukit Aman car park public toilet – is waived.

Details for the get together are as follows:

Date: Saturday 6 January 2007
Start Time: 4:00 p.m.
Venue: Sungai Pelek
x
Schedule:

2:30 p.m. : Start of travel from Kuala Lumpur
4:00 p.m. : Start of 13km run at Sg. Pelek
6:30 p.m. : Admire sunset at beach
7:30 p.m. : Travel to seafood restaurant for dinner
9:30 p.m. : Slow walk to jetty to help in digestion and to enjoy the gentle sea breeze
10:00 p.m. : Bon Voyage

Stay tune for more updates...

A Great Run at Sungai Pelek

Blue sky and everything nice at Sungai Pelek town: This photo was taken in front of Chee Wee (Penguin-11) parent's week-end country retreat. When I left USJ Subang Jaya at 3:00 p.m on Saturday 25 November, it was already started raining. Weng and Rose were traveling with me. Driving along KLIA road en route to Sepang town, the convectional rain gained momentum and increased the intensity. Raining heavily at that moment could mean fine weather after the rain. Somewhere near Sepang, it was good to see the clear sky there.

A rare find by Weng within the bushes near Chee Wee parent's house.

Traffic light colour: Even the fruit here is of multi-colour.

Country road, take me home... Both sides of the road were grown with trees, grasses, and very little traffic which is ideal for running. The old Toyota of model KE20 behind Rose must be owned by the kampung folks there. One has to be alert on the look out not for traffic but avoid stepping on the cow dung. The main users of country road could be cows and goats.

The course leaded us running alongside the scenic Bagan Lalang beach. At about 5:45 p.m., there was slight tint of orange hue for the sunset. That was truly a different running experience. We returned via a different route surrounded by trees but which was totally deserted of vehicle. Total distance is about 13km.

A group photo: Yap, Lee, OngSL, Janelle, Siok Bee, Tony and Eric.

Admiring the senset: We were half hour behind schedule in our run. At 7:00 p.m., the sun has almost set. Rose posed for photographs as the impromptu model.

Seafood dinner by the shore: Tony, Weng, Eric, Chee Wee and KC. We could hear the waves hitting the shore instead of the normal music plays through audio system. We were very hungry and could not wait for a group photo of dishes that we ordered. The food here was much cheaper. Despite we ordered about eight dishes, it was only RM15 per person (inclusive of drinks).

All the pretty gals seated together: Yap, Janelle, OngSL, Siok Bee, Vivian and Rose.

At the jetty: After the sumptuous dinner, we strolled along the concrete jetty that extended about 200 meters into the sea. The walk helped in digestion. We could feel the sea breeze here amid the fishy smell.

Dragon fruit: We returned to Chee Wee parent's house to admire the flowers of dragon fruit in full bloom. According to Chee Wee, the flowers only open up at night.

Running there on Saturday 25 November was rather unplanned. We were supposed to run there after Singapore Marathon (on 3 December). It was a great run at a great place.
x
Chee Wee is planning another run soon. Yes, we shall come again: attracted by the peaceful country road, scenic beach and good seafood dinner.

Planning a Weekend Get Away at Sungai Pelek

Work is in progress to plan a weekend get away at my hometown, Sungai Pelek. Sungai Pelek is about 86 km from Kuala Lumpur neighbouring Sepang town or KLIA. Looking at the following photos, the Penguin Runners were all fired up wanted to run there.
x
Of course, traveling that takes about one hour must be accompanied by gastronomical delight featuring the renowned local cuisine. The icing on the cake is that there is a beach where we can relax and admire the beautiful sunset.
x

Here is the plan:

a) Arrive at Sungai Pelek at 4pm, Saturday
b) Go for a 15km run. I am currently charting out for a scenic and lesser traffic course to the beach.
c) Relax, unwind and enjoy the beautiful sunset at the beach
d) Run back to my parents' weekend house which is about 3km away from the beach. Take bath.
e) Adjourn to nearby famous seafood restaurant for good food, and the price is very reasonable.

We will let you know once we have decided the date. Are you interested to join us?
