On a High to Conquer Low’s Peak

Wednesday October 20, 2010
By NG WEI LOON

ENDURANCE fitness buff Tony Quay will be out to accomplish a more gratifying end in his second appearance at the 24th Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon on Oct 23 and 24.

After failing to make it to the Low’s Peak in his debut last year, the 51-year-old is returning to compete in the men’s veteran (above 40 years) section on the opening day (Oct 23) of the meet.
This time, the determined Tony is aiming to fulfil his target of reaching the 8.72km mark within the stipulated time of three-and-half hours before tackling the challenging descending return trip to the finish line near the Kinabalu Park headquarters.
.
Stepping up: The group comprising mostly first-timers is all set for the gruelling Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon.

Tony admitted he had an agonising first outing when he suffered cramps on both his thighs one kilometre away from the summit (Low’s Peak).

“It was a painful experience to get back down especially when I was in such weak physical shape. Despite the fatigue, I knew that I should carry on walking at my own pace to the finish line. My condition would have got worse had I stopped,” he added.

And the upcoming excursion will be Tony’s 20th visit to Mount Kinabalu rated with net elevation of 1,866.4m from Timpohon Gate to Low’s Peak of 4,095.2m.

“I have gone up there 18 times on a leisurely pace. It will be a different approach in a race against time. I consider it more demanding than running the 42km distance on the road. But, I am prepared for this campaign. I began preparations in May. It is important to keep warm and hydrated to complete the downward journey in three hours in securing a hard earned recognition as a finisher,” said Tony, adding that his friend Yee Choi clocked 3’15 on the way up to finish with a respectable time of 5’23 last year.

Tony will be part of a large organised group from the Klang Valley comprising a total of 45 entries leaving for the three-night and four-day trip on the eve of the race day.

On the right track: E.K. Tee (front) leading the pack followed by KC Leong during one of their outings to Gunung Nuang in Hulu Selangor.

They will be making an attempt to finish the race within the qualifying marks.

For the more competitive men’s open race on the final day (Sunday), the competitors will have to reach the summit within two-and-half hours before heading down in not more than two hours (total of four-and-half hours).

Meanwhile, the women participants will be featuring in the race as the veterans with similar regulation time (within the period of three-and-half hour up followed another three hours down) a day earlier (Saturday).

The group’s co-ordinator K.C. Leong said the group, comprising mostly first-timers, are excited about embarking on their adventure at the event.

“We have set personal targets according to our respective abilities. Most of us enjoy long distance running and trekking over the weekends. We realise that it is going to be an uphill task for us to make the cut. Several of us have been taking part in various full marathon road races. But, we will need to overcome another two more elements for the Mount Kinabalu climb. The altitude and the cold weather are the additional two tricky factors. It is amazing that we have worked up the courage to get to the starting line,” he added.

Besides their regular training sessions at Gunung Nuang in Hulu Langat and Batu Caves in Gombak, they have also competed in two series of the Negri Sembilan climbing circuit.
They took part in the event at Gunung Datuk in early April followed by Gunung Angsi at the beginning of May as a build-up to the much anticipated Mount Kinabalu challenge.

MotoGP 2010 Sepang (2)

The motorbike of the World Champion, Jorge Lorenzo

From my observation, here are the interesting points for the 2010 MotoGP Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang on Sunday 10 October 2010:

(1) The results: Valentino Rossi (1st), Andrea Dovizioso (2nd) and Jorge Lorenzo (3rd). Nevertheless, Jorge Lorenzo won the 2010 MotoGP World Championship with the cumulative points scored.

(2) From the TV live telecast in Astro's Sports Channel 812, the grandstands of Sepang F1 Circuit was full of fans cheering on anything that moves. It was reported that a total of 62,000 spectators went there to witness this spectacular yearly MotoGP event. The Sepang F1 Circuit looks really good: with magnificent grandstands; smooth curvature of the racing tracks surrounded by greens in its aerial view.

(3) Lorenzo led the early stages of the race before settling for a safe third behind team-mate Valentino Rossi (1st) and Andrea Dovizioso (2nd).

Notice that during hard breaking, the rear wheel is lifted off the ground

(4) While celebrating the championship win, Lorenzo went round the track on the slow down lap with his Spanish flag. From far, his motorcycle looked like spewing flowers on the track and later came to a complete halt. On inspection, the poor shredded flag was caught in the rear chain; he has to seek help from the marshals to untangle the mess.

(5) Rossi was seen happily showing his 46th victory that coincides with his motorbike racing number “46”. This is truly a legendary fellow: after falling down in one of his earlier races with broken legs and shoulder injury, he was seen continuing with his races even in Plaster of Paris.

(6) While two of the Yamaha riders got first and third positions, two of the Ducati riders (Casey Stoner and Aleix Espargaro) skidded down the tarmac in frustration. Between men and the machines, are Yamaha's riders better or Yamaha's motorbikes better?

(7) At the podium high up above, after receiving the trophies, Lorenzo made a swift exit that left Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso shooting champagne with each other in the oversized champagne bottles. The commentators were puzzle also with Lorenzo’s uninformed exit. When the TV cameras zoom on to the ground, we see Lorenzo was busy shooting the team members with the champagne; he was later whisked away; probably, shooting at the wrong target.

(8) During the interview, the three champions of similar small size, they voices do sound like kids. It was a stark contrast with the excellent skill and the nerve of steel while riding the huge and mean machines at blistering speed negotiation tight corners without slowing down.

One of the Moto GP queens

The legendary Fiat Yamaha rider -- Valentino Rossi. He fell in one of the races, broke his legs; while recuprating, he went for more races while wearing the plaster-of-Paris. And that he won in the race also.

Full of raw power

Mt KK Climbathon - 7th Training

This is the 7th training for the coming Mount Kinabalu Climbathon. With another two more training sessions to go, the team is ready for the big day on 23 October 2010.

Some of the team members come a long way when participating in the local climbathon circuit starting with Gunung Tampin (6 March 2010), Gunung Datuk (10 April) and Gunung Angsi (8 May). click here
.
The group later spend most of the training at Gunung Nuang. Divided into three distinct terrains, G. Nuang is best suit for climbathon training with unobstructed wide trails. Of course, the next challenging venue is the steps training at Batu Caves. Though it is a bit monotonous going up and down the 272 steps, it is indeed a challenging place for training.
