Flash Photography Workshop

Let me share with you a few of the photos taken in the 1-day photography workshop at the Nikonian Academy on Saturday 9 January (that cost RM 400 a day).

Please click here for photos taken by yours truly (KC).

A fair-skin Jojo with her soft golden hair dancing gently to the movement of air

There are 17 participants in this class -- good response! All carrying expansive SLR photographic equipment. Other than the theory, we are taught not to point the flash unit directly at the subject. So next time when you see someone who use flash unit during daylight and turn his flash unit pointing at all different directions (other than the main subject of the photo), you know that he has received some kind of 'yea chuk' (pro training).

George -- The handsome, yow yeng and macho guy. Standing next to the posters of Ah Long financers enhance his yow yeng image... :-) I am supposed to make the sky bluer; instead, there is glow from the sky.
.

The two course conductors, Andrew and Sean, are really good. They are full of enthusiasm and very passionate about photography; they readily impart their knowledge to the participants.

The Nikonian Academy actually engaged three models for the participants to perform the hands-on training. What confuse us (or me) is that the course conductor wrote on the white-board "Don't shoot girls"... :-)

After viewing my photos, I am not very satisfied with the results. Given another chance, I think I could improve the results further. Maybe I can try taking the photos of trekkers or runners... :-) Nevetheless, I do learn valuealbe new skill arising from this workshop.

Serious learning in action: this is how we do the photo shoot. Andrew (in white shirt, right side) is one of the course conductors; not in the photo is Sean Liew, another course conductor.

Backpacking to Taiwan

After last year's trekking trip to Mount Everest Base Camp (5,500m), looks like this year I will be having less trekking. The intended trekking to Annapurna Circuit (AC) 5,400m would be postponed to 2011.

So for the first half year, I shall be joining Donny Ling, an experienced backpacker, for a free-and-easy holiday trip to Taiwan in mid-April this year for two weeks. He has the backpacking experience for about 20 locations around the globe.

The maximum size of the team is 8 persons. Currently, we are seeking for one more team member. There are 3 guys and 4 gals in the team already. If you are interested, do contact me
at kcle3@streamyx.com

Requirement: that you are a runner or a trekker and able to speak English and Mandarin.

Post-EBC Dinner - Part 2

Though the journey to Everest Base Camp (EBC) completed on 20 October 2009, the fellowship of the trekkers just begins after that. After the Round 1 Post-EBC Get-Together Dinner on 8 November, we have Round 2 Post-EBC gathering at Joseph Yong's house. Joseph Yong is unique, with his determination and staying focus, he trekked to EBC alone one week earlier. BRAVO !!

Click here to view photos taken by yours truly (KC).

In the living hall of Joseph Yong's house ... Sharon Tan, Jayne, Huey Ling, Joseph and WongFK (partly hidden). Joseph's house is ready for the coming Christmas and Chinese New Year celebration. According to him, he just turns on the appropriate lighting for the festive season -- and that is done!
.
Even the golf bags are ready for the next round of games

This is one of Joseph's strong points: he can cook very well !! As to the wine bottles on top, the content has been well consumed.

Can you recognized this guy? Yeah! He is Edmund Hillary -- the first human to stand on top of the highest mountain on Earth, Mount Everest. After coming back from Everest Base Camp on 20 October 2009, the word Everest has special meaning to us now. After all, we went to the same base camp where all mountainers prepare for the ascent to Mount Everest. We were watching the DVD "Celebration of 50 Years Golden Jubilee. EVEREST. 50 Years on the Mountain". The DVD was bought by Joseph at Kathmandu, and the quality of the DVD was superb.

The Fair Lady Trekkers -- Huey Ling, Fiona, Sharon and Jayne

Fiona is detailing the account of her expedition to Laos (after the EBC trekking) ... "while sitting on a raft drifting down the river, there is this huge snake of almost 20 feet long trying to climb on to the raft. So we screamed and screamed ... and the guide beat the hell out of the snake... "

Hmmm... sumptuous dinner.. All dishes are cooked/prepared by Joseph.

Cheers! Cheers! (L-R) Joseph, PK Chan, Fiona, Jayne, Sharon, WongFK, SC Yong. Back: Huey Ling and yours truly (KC). If I stand on the left of Huey Ling, I could just camouflage with the background colour.

Looking Gorgeous ... Wah! Even washing plates also attract the cameraman ...

So is wiping table by Sharon Tan after the meal.

While the guys are busy analyzing the huge EBC poster (and taking photos also) ... :-) This posting is just done up. It involves scanning the EBC map, then super-impose the photos on the map.

Finally, this gathering is also celebrating Joseph's birthday. Happy Birthday to you ... to you! As to your wish? I think it is something like: trek to Island Peak (6,200m) or Mera Peak (6,500m) in Nepal for the next challenge (require technical climb) !!

Running Shoes

Running Shoes May Cause Damage to Knees, Hips and Ankles, New Study Suggests

ScienceDaily (Jan. 6, 2010) — Knee osteoarthritis (OA) accounts for more disability in the elderly than any other disease. Running, although it has proven cardiovascular and other health benefits, can increase stresses on the joints of the leg. In a study published in the December 2009 issue of PM&R: The journal of injury, function and rehabilitation, researchers compared the effects on knee, hip and ankle joint motions of running barefoot versus running in modern running shoes. They concluded that running shoes exerted more stress on these joints compared to running barefoot or walking in high-heeled shoes.

Thanks to Peck Yah who share this website with me.

My comments: The report says running shoes may cause damage to knees, hips and ankles. So what is the alternative for runners? Are we going to run barefoot? Maybe the scientists in Science Daily are to do a research study on "Running may cause damage to knees, hips and angles".

Post-EBC Get-together Dinner

It was indeed an evening of good camaraderie amid good food and good laughter. Thank you all for being at the Unique Seafood Restaurant, Petaling Jaya, that enable the dinner on Sunday evening successfully held. I truly enjoyed myself with the food, the conversation, the drinks, the friendship and of course the karaoke session. Special thanks to Sharon Tan for organizing this post-EBC get-together dinner.

Please click here to view the photos taken by yours truly (KC).

Cheers! Cheers! (L-R): SC Yong, Pei Ling, Joseph Yong, Sharon Tan, Rocky Dan, KC Leong, PK Chan, WongFK. The huge fish in the background set the theme relating to seafood.

Thanks to Jospeh Yong and Leng for the special agar-agar cake to commemorate the successful completion to Everest Base Camp. The cake has a flat area and a big round cup shape that signified Mount Everest and the lower plains. You two are really thoughtful for the occasion. They even present two bottles of tonic drink nicely wrapped in gift paper each to PK Chan and Rocky Dan.

It is good to include two additional strong trekkers – Joseph Yong and Leng – in the EBC group of trekkers. Joseph Yong’s determination of scaling to EBC alone really impressed us while Leng who is able to organize the recent SkyTrek Adventure flawlessly showed that she is a good organizer. Click here for Sky Trex report.

From a different angle: KC Leong, PK Chan, WongFK, Leng, Jayne, Yee Choi

Thanks to PK Chan for bringing a bottle of Champagne to spice up the mood of the gathering. After a few cheers, we realized that we need at least a few more bottles of Champagne or wine.

The setting in this room for dining is posh. The walls are decorated with many huge fishes that sure look dramatic as though we would be eaten by the hungry big fishes. In actual fact, we eat them – we ordered a fairly expansive steam 'soon hock' fish that tasted superb!

The agar-agar cake in celebrating the successful trekking trip to Mount Everest Base Camp

We agreed that Jayne can sing very well. She has a pleasant voice especially when delivering Mandarin and Cantonese songs that can rival many of the singers. Though Rocky Dan and I like the song Hotel California, but I never know that it was so difficult to sing. Thanks to PK Chan who cancel it prematurely. Otherwise, I think we are going to have sore throat.

PK Chan has a sweet and bassy voice when heard over the karaoke system. In responding to Sharon's remarks that I could sing, PK Chan quipped that KC now refused to let go of the mike. I think I need a lot of training (just like trekking) to improve my voice. Anyway, this is definitely safer than trekking in Everest region which is much comfortable, and I only need to open and close my mouth.

Hmmm... yummy... the excellent 'shoon hock' fish

Yee Choi would want to sing a few Japanese songs to show us how eloquently he can converse and sing in Japanese. However, we examined the karaoke system a few times and it is not Japanese-songs-ready yet, maybe in version 2.0 !

While singing Bee Gee’s ‘Words’ and ‘Melody Fair’ songs, there was one action which we forgot to do: to cover one of our ears in emulating the famous stage act. While singing Sir Cliff Richard’s The Young Ones, at times, I would have to replace the ‘ones’ with ‘once’.

During the dinner, we suddenly realized that the name Slim Wong coined by Sharon Tan is an excellent name possibly we have been hearing a lot of the Slim Shady song. When Wong is not slim, he can always say his EBC girlfriend gave him this name to motivate him to slim down. When he is slim already, the name reaffirms his EBC girlfriend's aspiration.

.

The L.J.S. singers in action -- Leng, Jayne and Sharon

We wished that it was a Saturday night and we can sing until the cows come home. Nevertheless, it was a good start that other than trekking together, we could also sing together very well. When we left, it was almost 11pm where there wasn't any other diner in the restaurant!

By now, you would notice that the other EBC members Alexis, Fiona, Siti and Ikhwan were not present in the dinner. Well, Fiona went for some adventurous exploration in Laos while Alexis was holidaying and relaxing in Bali. After achieving 5,500m at the EBC trek, any other exploration that is having lower elevation should be easier now.
.

Being the EBC (Mout Everest Base Camp) Team Lead, I am honoured to be nominted to cut the cake

This group of trekkers is a versatile group: we could trek in the mountains walking non-stop for many hours; do a vertical climb and walking around in mid-air for the SkyTrek Adventure challenge. It is fun to note that without knowing the actual difficulty, we upgraded to the extreme challenge category for the maiden attempt.

We look forward to more get-together karaoke sessions to be organized by Sharon Tan again, other than trekking. Tentatively, the next singing session is schedule on Saturday 23 January 2010. Cheers!

Kuala Lumpur Fireworks

Happy New Year 2010

On 31 Dec 2009, the new year's eve, I went to Dataran Merdeka to join the crowd and the fun to usher in the new year. Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur was flooded with people for the countdown to 2010. Other than the concert, the main attraction, of course was the display of spectacular fireworks that lasted for 10 minutes.

After the evening rain, the sky was clear. The icing on the cake was that the moon was clearly visible in the sky. Take notice that the KL Bandaraya Building shows the greetings of "Happy New Year" and "2010".

A Great New Year 2010

Here's wishing that you get ...
The biggest slice of happiness and good luck
to fill your heard and home ..
Today and the whole year through!
Have a great new year ahead!
.
Keep running, keep trekking and keep fit !!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010 !

Here is a quote from a runner friend, SL, who got it from Runner’s World:

Remember, the feeling you get from a good run is far better than the feeling you get from sitting around wishing you were running.

I am sure the girlfriend would be very impressed with the extra hard work (running)
