AdventuRUN 2007

Written by Josie

It was a great morning to gather at the starting point of the run. Many of us have not been to Taman Pertanian in Shah Alam for a long long time. It was also a nice change to escape from the haze in the city and breathed in fresh air, surrounded by greenery. The turnouts were encouraging. As KC mentioned before, “For runners, any charitable effort is not complete without the run” is very true as one fellow runner spent almost one hour searching for the location.

Greenery everywhere ... are these runners after the run?
The running route was tough and challenging with many slopes, some with gradual ascent while some were steeper slopes. It was a real test of strength and fitness, many times worst than the “double hill” route that many avid runners were accustomed to. Any descend slopes is a welcoming sight for the runners before the next uphill. After much huffing and puffing, the finishing point was a welcoming sight for all the runners.

Queens of the AdventuRun
Overall, it was a commendable effort by Organising Committee consists of Taylor College’s students in organizing the charity run. Along the route, there were race officials stationed at every junction to ensure that runners kept to the correct route and one water station was provided at the halfway point. And apt to the purpose of having the charity run, participants were treated to a talk on the awareness of AIDs after the run.

Note by KC: Looks like we have an alternative site for training runs other than the usual “Double-hill” at Bukit Tungku, Kuala Lumpur. According to Weng who ran in the AdventuRUN, the starting area was going uphill – hill after hill – and that was really challenging.

Trekking to Everest Base Camp

I am pleased to inform that Dr. Walter Gomez will be going for a great trekking trip to Everest Base Camp en route from Kalapathar, Nepal. His team will start the 18-day trip from 3 November 2007.
.

Dr. Walter and TanAB - analysing the map of Everest Base Camp

On Sunday afternoon, both Dr. Walter and I went to Tan AB’s house. The purpose was to brief Dr. Walter what to expect since both Tan AB and I have been to that part of the world before. Tan AB, an avid trekker and a marathon runner, has trekked to Kalapathar and Everest Base Camp. As for me, after reaching Cho La Pass, Nepal our team returned and did not trek to Kalapathar.

TanAB returned from trekking in Nepal two weeks before I started my trekking to Cho La Pass on 23 May 2007. And before I went, I actually got tips from him what to bring and to expect. That valuable briefing took almost two hours.

Going through the trekking details with Dr. Walter was fun as it rekindled the memorable trip. Time past fast and the briefing session took three hours to complete!

TanAB is demonstrating the various type of gears

Dr. Walter is engaging the same Trek and Tour Company in Nepal - Mt. Manaslu Adventure Treks Ltd owned by Mr. Cheban.

Please click here to read more details of the company.

If you would like to join Dr. Walter in this great trekking trip, you can contact him at: 03-6258 6319. E-mail:
drwalter@streamyx.com

Minimum fitness requirement: You must be very fit and have done numerous trekking trips. A trekker is required to walk about 7 hours per day; at times, in steep terrain. This trek is classified as Strenuous (classification: strenuous, moderate, and easy). Runners who have done full marathon recently are automatically qualified.

The best time to trek in Napel is October to November and April to May. I will be organizing another trekking trip to Annapurna, Nepal in early May 2008. If you are interested, please contact me.

My trekking story and photos at Cho La Pass: please click June 2007 Archives on the left sidebar of KC&SR weblog. Scroll down the webpages.

Here is wishing Dr. Walter and his team a pleasant journey and a successful mission. BRAVO!

Trekking Stick

Note: Jason Lee, Pacesetters photographer, will be taking photos in the Adventure Run 2007 at Taman Cahaya, Shah Alam, this Sunday morning, 7 October. So, if you see him, make sure to pose for the camera and give your best smile, will ya?

I am pleased to recommend a trekking stick which I used when I went for the trekking trip at Pine Tree Trail on 29 September 2007. It was good. Trekking stick is vital to maintain balance and when going downhill that would ease the body weight on the knees. With the unusual design, one of the trekkers gave this trekking stick a unique name: blink man stick.

Good feature
Lightweight and well built – good for serious trekking

Retractable - It has three segments with locking and releasing mechanism

Anti-shock – The shock absorbing capability is useful so that it absorbs the vibration when the stick impacts with hard ground

Built-in LCD Torchlight - One of the most ingenious designs by the Chinese is the seamless attachment of a LCD torchlight at the handle. The white light from the LCD torchlight is very bright. In trekking, torchlight is an essential item to bring.

If you are interested, you can get them from Steven (penguin-5):
Telephone: 012- 302 7330
Email: steven2114@gmail.com

Price of each trekking stick:
With LCD torchlight: RM 38 and you are entitled for 20% discount. So, it costs RM 30.40

Without LCD torchlight: RM 28 and after 20% discount, it costs RM 22.40

About Torchlight
When I was new in trekking, I could not understand why we need to bring torchlight since it is daytime and the sky is bright. It was during one trekking trip to Gunung Irau, Cameron Highland, a few years ago that I appreciate the importance of torchlight. In that trekking trip, we were still stuck in the jungle when the sun went down. It was pitch black in the jungle. I could not even see my fingers a few inches away. Luckily, we managed to find our way and return to civilisation with the help of torchlight.

Do you know that the headlamp of a motorbike is more effective in illuminating the road than the headlamp of a car? This is because the beam of light follows the turning direction. In this case, the beam of light will always point at the path where you heading.

Adventure Run - Collection of bibs

According to Sai Hou, the Organizing Chair Person of Adventure Run 2007, the organizing committee of Taylor’s Business School college students will operate a booth at Bukit Aman car park on Saturday 6 October from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. to facilitate runners to collect the bibs.

Runners can also collect the bibs from the college on 5 and 6 October, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

So far, the response is encouraging both from the college and other runners.

Note: Taylor’s Business School is located at Wisma Subang Jaya (formerly where Sime Bank or RHB Bank was); it is not the Main Campus.

For runners, if you have not been running in the scenic park of Taman Cahaya of Shah Alam, this is the good opportunity to participate in this charity run.

One friend said, “Aiya… after paying RM15, still have to run for 10 km.” For runners, any charitable effort is not complete without the run. So, even when doing charity, we must also sweat it out – in running.
